What's up Doc?

My baby Rowan,

Dr. Y instructed us to setup an appointment for you with the pediatrician the very next day after leaving the hospital. We selected a practice near home so that if emergencies arise we don't have to drive into Austin so you can receive care. As we drove up to the office I had a great feeling about this place already. When we got inside I noticed the separate rooms they have - healthy kids and sick kids -which is a relief for any parent trying to keep their kiddo from catching anything. They also have this really nice breastfeeding room
which is super cozy, has soothing music for mom & baby and best of all, its private! The pediatrician who saw you today was Dr. Collins and she asked how you were doing at home with nursing. I explained that we're exclusively breastfeeding and today I felt my milk was coming in, but it hasn't let down yet so she suggested that we supplement with formula because you need to regain the weight you lost since leaving the hospital.



At birth, you were 6lb, but now you are 5lb7oz. Weight loss in newborns is normal, but since you weren't an 8-10lb baby, we can't risk you losing more than 7% of your body weight. And just like mama when she was born you have jaundice so we're going to have to give you lots of natural light when we're home to help bring your bilirubin levels down. Daddy doesn't like knowing they're going to be rechecking your jaundice levels every other day because it means getting your tiny little foot pricked with a needle. But we both know its whats best for you.


I think I mentioned the really nice nursing room at the pediatricians office.
You can see here Rowan that you are always really happy when you're belly is full. You have the most beautiful smile in the world. I just love it when you smile at me honey!

When I was still pregnant I often visited other pregnancy blogs, but as I neared my due date I started visiting baby websites. I soon realized that I probably WAS going to be one of those moms who takes photos of her baby every day. Tonight I had to photograph you talking with daddy. You have very similar expressions - you both raise your eyebrows and get wrinkles along the top of your forehead, both perk your lips out when you're trying to show excitement and your eyes widen. Rowan you are so much like your daddy!
